6 days ago I turned 80

6 days. 6 long days now laying in the hospital. 6 days since I was at the gym doing a boxing workout and I blew my back out, again (herniated and torn discs). When my back went out, I swear I aged 50 years instantly; I am currently only able to walk with a walker, need help getting to the washroom and need someone to wash my hair for me. On top of that my back is killing me and I’m being fed All Bran and prune juice every morning (the pain killers have an unfortunate side effect that requires such matters…). These are all things I did not expect to need for at least another 50 years! 6 days ago I was 28, stressing that I only had one more birthday (coming soon enough) before the big 3-0 arrived. Now I find myself in a seemingly pre-maturely aged body and am desperately clinging to the fact that I’m “only 28!”. Perspective changes everything…

I am praying for a magic solution to present itself so that I can get of here and return to the gym and to my life! That said, as much as I dislike being in the hospital, if I have to be in one, the Chesley hospital is the place to be. The nurses, doctors and food services staff here have been AMAZING! I cannot say enough good things about the staff in this tiny hospital; they are kind, caring, sympathetic, patient, thorough and very good at their jobs. They have treated me exceptionally well, have made me laugh every single day, have answered my unbelievable number of questions, have involved me in every single step of my care, have pushed for me to have tests done and gotten me appointments weeks early than most receive them, have encouraged and supported alternative treatments (acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage therapy, etc.) and have made what could be a very miserable time incredibly tolerable. They are truly a group of exceptional health care workers and people.

Please send good back vibes my way (and feel free to visit the Chesley hospital and me anytime!). I’ll be back up and running before you know it!

Hang in there Jake. Just remember, you are one of the most accident prone people ever, but you are also the best healer I’ve ever seen. You’ll be back in action in no time!!! xo
